The Matt Gross frugal traveler articles also annoy me as the travel stories aren't particularly funny or clever and i find it somewhat offensive that he pretends to be doling out advice to save people money while blowing though several times more cash than is really necessary. Fodor's or Lonely Planet are much more informative.

I once tried to post a comment to this effect but the NYT does not seem to let people upload anything critical, which sort of explains why the dude has such a positive online following.

I think has an awesome gig though. Can you imagine in to be paid to vacation anywhere in the world, write mediocre reports about your trip and be published in a famous newspaper? About the frugal business, he could use some work, but his relationship with the NYT is a real accomplishment.

My wife and I love Chicago. We always go once a year, typically for two nights. Granted, it has taken some trial and error, but we are able to have a great time for far less than $370 - for two people.
