David at My Two Dollars listed a free U.S. directory assistance service in a longer post on general freebies. You dial a toll-free number and must listen to an ad before they give you the number you’ve requested, but you save yourself the 411 fee. Seems like a useful service for travelers who don’t have access to a phone book to make reservations or general inquiries for museums, restaurants, stores, babysitters, what have you.
Thankfully the number is easy to remember: dial 1-800-FREE-411.
