Once upon a time, a traveler wanted to request free highway maps from a few neighboring states before setting off on a road trip. Who needs a pricey AAA membership, the traveler thought, when every state produces a map for free? In the hunt for maps, this traveler discovered that some states distribute them via the tourism office, while others are hidden on the department of transportation’s website or even, in rare cases, produced by the governor’s office. The traveler wished there were a comprehensive guide to finding all 50 state maps easily. For this Friday’s freebie, I’ve compiled that guide — not only to U.S. State Highway Maps, but to Tourism Information request pages as well. Whether you’re planning a cross-country drive or gearing up for some backyard tourism, you’ll find this resource invaluable for your next U.S. trip! See the full list after the jump.
Insider tip: Many states don’t finish printing the year’s new guides until February or March, so now is the perfect time to pre-order information, generally with a full events calendar, for the coming year.

How about free maps from the Canadian Provinces? I have been able to get all but: Alberta, British Columbia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Quebec and Yukon. There is also the Nunavut Province but since there is no roads per se I don’t believe I would look for a map from this new province.
For Quebec, call 1-800-BONJOUR and specifically ask for a roadmap.
David, if you read the third section on the linked page entitled “Get the Map,” it instructs you where to email your request.

Thanks for putting this list together. Great idea, great execution.
Did you try to find a site to get a D.C. map? I did, and I struck out.
How about Puerto Rico? How about other U.S. territories?
Don’t let it be said that I don’t aim to please, Ed.
I’ve added the tourist information link for DC and have asked them about a highway map. Their brochure includes some maps, but not any I’d rely on to get around. I wonder if DC is not included on the VA and MD maps? You’ll have to request them and do a bit of research for us!
I’ve put in requests for information from the U.S. territories — their web tourism infrastructure certainly leaves something to be desired. Will add links above as they come in, so stay tuned!
You are a better searcher than I am, Gunga Din.
My first trip out there, Exxon had a very good map of the Mall that was free, I think. Directions to D.C. are available from the Maryland and Virginia maps, but not the detail I would like to see for tourism purposes.
I would expect there to be a pretty active tourist promotion bunch in Puerto Rico. It sure would be nice to see some promotion of American Samoa and Guam, though, don’t you think?
Did I forget to mention that Google is my middle name? 🙂
You *would* think that about Puerto Rico (new slogan, “No Passport Required”), now wouldn’t you? I’ve even seen them advertise around. I have to say their webpage doesn’t impress. But what’s important is really how promptly and pleasantly they reply to my email, I suppose.
Hey Ed — DC was already up there, listed under Washington, DC. Guess we’re both blind, eh?
We’ll see if the DC people can point me to a better map.

Just a small note of appreciation for gathering these links together. I travelled around the US a long long time ago (internet-wise) way back in 2001 when most states didn’t offer any digital media and everything was a printed book. Nonetheless, they shipped them all out to Australia for me and it was a great experience to go to the mailbox and find a new parcel every few days for a couple of months (some states take longer to send out stuff than others). It was a big help when we got on the road since we had 47 state maps on Day One (and since we went to 43 states, they were used well!!).
I was just looking around again with some future travel ideas and remember it was a huge pain in the neck to find all the sites the first time around but you’ve taken all the hard work out of it.
Three thousand karma points to you, my friend!
Thanks so much for this list! Just wanted to let you know that the Maryland Highway Map link doesn’t work and the New York link sends you to a page not found.
